Advanced Diagnostic Hearing Tests

At The ENT Care & General Hospital, we provide a comprehensive suite of diagnostic tests to assess hearing function and accurately determine the type and degree of hearing loss. Below are the details of the advanced audiological assessments we offer:

1. Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)

This is the most common and basic hearing test. It measures a person’s ability to hear different pitches (frequencies) and volumes (intensities). During this test, the patient listens to a series of tones played at varying frequencies and volumes, using headphones. The results help identify the quietest sounds a person can hear, which is essential for diagnosing hearing loss in specific ranges.
  • Purpose: To assess hearing sensitivity and identify hearing loss severity.
  • Uses: Commonly used to diagnose sensorineural or conductive hearing loss.

2. Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry)

This test evaluates the functioning of the middle ear, including the eardrum and the ossicles (the tiny bones in the middle ear). The procedure involves changing the air pressure in the ear canal and measuring the eardrum’s movement in response. This helps detect fluid behind the eardrum, eustachian tube dysfunction, or damage to the eardrum or ossicles.
  • Purpose: To measure the compliance (movement) of the eardrum and middle ear.
  • Uses: Helpful in diagnosing middle ear problems, such as ear infections, fluid in the ear, and eustachian tube dysfunction.

3. BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry)

BERA, or Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR), is an objective test that measures the electrical activity in the brainstem in response to sound stimuli. Electrodes are placed on the scalp to record how sound travels from the ear to the brain. This test is particularly useful for detecting hearing loss in infants and individuals who cannot respond to conventional hearing tests.
  • Purpose: To assess how sound signals travel from the ear to the brain.
  • Uses: Essential for diagnosing hearing loss in newborns, infants, and individuals with suspected auditory nerve issues.

4. OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions)

This test measures the sound waves generated by the inner ear (cochlea) in response to a stimulus. Healthy cochleas produce these emissions, which can be detected by a tiny microphone placed in the ear canal. The presence or absence of these emissions helps determine the function of the outer hair cells in the cochlea, which are critical for hearing.
  • Purpose: To assess cochlear (inner ear) function and detect early hearing loss.
  • Uses: Widely used for newborn hearing screening and to detect early cochlear damage or hearing loss.
